Central Oregon is a high desert region with a history of logging, sheep herding, and cattle ranching. From the eastern slopes of the Cascade mountain range the desert spreads east at 3500 feet elevation through the transition of ponderosa forests to junipers, sage, bitterbrush and rabbit brush. Still today, horse and cattle ranching produce their own breed of cowboys and rugged individuals sharing the landscape with deer and antelope, coyotes, cougars and jackrabbits.
